Hyaluronic Acid
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found in the synovial fluid of joints, where it acts as a lubricant and shock absorber. In healthy joints, HA binds to water, creating a gel-like substance that reduces friction between cartilage surfaces, allowing joints to move smoothly. This viscous (sticky) fluid also acts as a shock absorber, cushioning the joint during movement and impact.
In osteoarthritis OA, the production of HA decreases, which is thought to contribute to joint pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. HA injections, known as visco-supplementation, are a clinical treatment option that can help alleviate these symptoms by replenishing the HA levels in the affected joints.
When injected into the joint, HA enhances lubrication, reduces friction, and improves the quality of synovial fluid, which can help reduce pain and improve joint function. It also interacts with nerve endings to reduce pain and promotes cartilage health.
HA injections are particularly beneficial for patients who do not respond well to oral painkillers/ other treatments and for those where steroid isn’t suitable. HA injections can work well as part of an exercise programme. When compared to steroid injection, HA has been shown to offer greater improvement to quality of life, and longer-lasting pain relief for up to 6 months +, with less side effects. Unlike steroid injections, HA does not usually delay potential surgery access, as no immune suppression (reduction of immune system response), and does not have any known interactions with pre-existing medical conditions or medications.
HA injections can represent a safe and effective treatment for joint pain including OA and cartilage degeneration.
